Breaking: Edwards Calls for Support of Dodd's Fillibuster on Bad FISA Bill

John Edwards came out this evening against the telecom immunity of the FISA bill, currently before Congress and in full support of Senator Dodd's filibuster.

As if it's not enough that the Bush administration has been illegally spying on Americans. Now, the Bush administration wants retroactive immunity for telephone companies regardless of the legality of their actions in handing over record of Americans in Bush's illegal domestic spying.  The The FISA Bill would grant immunity to any telecom company that may have violated the law by assisting the administration in carrying out its illegal wiretapping program by handing over their customers' private records without a warrant.

The Dodd-Feingold Amendment would strip telcom immunity from the bill.  If that fails, Senator Dodd will filibuster:

If after debate, the Senate appears ready to pass legislation granting telecom providers retroactive immunity I will use any and all legislative tools at my disposal, including a filibuster, to prevent this deeply flawed bill from becoming law.
It's official, Dodd will filibuster a bad FISA Bill.

This is a noble gesture and the right thing to do, but without the support of Presidential candidates, it make not get the traction needed to be effective.

On January 22, Hamsher posted that Edwards would be "the perfect person to lead with this message."

John Edwards is the perfect person to lead with this message. Such an action would illustrate his genuine commitment to change and fighting vested interests in Washington, and hopefully it will channel that intense anti-immunity passion toward his campaign.

Firedoglake

Senator Edwards has been very outspoken about illegal spying on Americans thoughout his campaign. Last summer, he spoke to a local blogger about this:

Tonight, Edwards pledged his full support for Senator Dodd's filibuster.

Jane Hamsher of Firedoglake reports:

John Edwards on FISA

John Edwards:

In Washington today, telecom lobbyists have launched a full-court press to win retroactive immunity for their illegal eavesdropping on American citizens.

Granting retroactive immunity will let corporate law-breakers off the hook and hamstring efforts to learn the truth about Bush's illegal spying program.

"It's time for Senate Democrats to show a little backbone and stand up to George W. Bush and the corporate lobbyists.  They should do everything in their power -- including joining Senator Dodd's efforts to filibuster this legislation -- to stop retroactive immunity.  The Constitution should not be for sale at any price."

Re: Breaking: Edwards Calls for Support of Dodd's (2.00 / 4)

I'm just stunned by Harry Reid's spinelessness on this issue.  I've made excuses for him so many times, but in this case he's even refusing to extend legislative courtesies to members of his own party that he routinely extends to the Republicans.  It's wrong on many levels.

Here's hoping that the Presidential candidates who actually have voting rights in the Senate will join Edwards and Dodd on this issue.

Indeed!

Dems need to start showing a little more backbone.

Re: Breaking: Edwards Calls for Support of Dodd's (none / 0)

Apparently Edwards was on Olbermann tonight and didn't mention this despite expectations he would.

Here's Obama's statement:

"I strongly oppose retroactive immunity in the FISA bill. No one should get a free pass to violate the basic civil liberties of the American people - not the president of the United States, and not the telecommunications companies that fell in line with his warrantless surveillance program [... T]hat is why I am proud to stand with Sen. Dodd and a grassroots movement of Americans who are standing up for our civil liberties and the rule of law."

Re: Breaking: Edwards Calls for Support of Dodd's (2.00 / 2)

In all fairness, Olberman asked the questions and led the interview. So, I suppose you'd have to ask Keith, why he didn't bring it up on his show.

Glad to see Obama is on board. Being an active Senator, does he plan to go to DC for this?

Re: Breaking: Edwards Calls for Support of Dodd's (2.00 / 2)

Yes, but will Mr. Obama show up for the vote.  He and Mrs. Clinton didn't bother to support Dodd last time.

Edwards should lead a march to the Senate reminding Reid why they were given the majority in '06.

Hard to say. Obama has missed most votes during this campaign.

Re: Breaking: Edwards Calls for Support of Dodd's (2.00 / 2)

Apparently Harry Reid is going to require a "real" filibuster on this.  It's going to require more than just moral support from our progressive Senators.

It's astonishing that Democrats don't realize the political opportunity they have here.  If Bush vetos the FISA bill because it doesn't have telecom immunity, then he's putting the wishes of the telecom companies ahead of national security, just as Ted Kennedy has explained it.

Unfortunately, just as in 2006, it seems like their strategy is to surrender to the Republicans on every controversial vote and run out the clock until the election.  It's sad.

Yes, it's a disappointment. To think, how hopeful people were when we won back both houses in 06. Now it seems, we are stuck with a do nothing Congress.

Re: Breaking: Edwards Calls for Support of Dodd's (2.00 / 1)

Last time, it was okay for all of the candidates to not be there because it takes 60 yes votes to break your usual filibuster, regardless of the number of no votes.

I'm not sure that Reid seriously means it when he says that this will require an actual, stand there and talk forever, filibuster. It would be kind of a shock given that he's never actually forced the Republicans to do it. We'll see what happens.

As I understand it, though, the House has passed a version that doesn't give retroactive immunity, so they'll still have to go to a conference committee, and then pass it through both houses again. So there's a long way to go before this thing becomes law.

Re: Breaking: Edwards (none / 0)

That's what I'm wondering.

It's ironic he has spent so much time talking about the Senate when he has spent much time apologizing for his votes when he was actually in it.  He's so passionate about it now, I woud hope when he loses, he will try to get back in, vote the way he keeps harping on everyone else to, instead of going back to to work for the Hedge fund that it seems he still has 16 million invested in.

Awesome - (2.00 / 2)

Once again, Edwards leads. I liked this:

Get thee to DC and filibuster, Senators.

Get em Jane!

Re: Breaking: Edwards Calls for Support of Dodd's (2.00 / 1)

Clinton leaving SC has absolutely nothing to do with this FISA Bill.

Edwards was making the point, that if Clinton has already left SC, even before their primary, it follows that she wont be there to campaign in the general election.

I think it's pretty apparent that Hillary has the plan as Kerry did, write off the South, as Kerry did. Look what good that did us!

Democrats need to stop writing off all Southern states and ignoring the voices of Southerners.
