John Edwards Kicks Barack Obama's Ass! (w/video)

Last night, on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, John Edwards admitted to beating Obama in a game of basketball when Leno asked, "Did you kick his ass?"

The interview was generally lighthearted with Edwards responding with laughter when Leno asked about John's decision "to run as a middle aged white man."

Watch Edwards on Leno here:

Edwards seemed to express concern of how the campaigns are going, noting that, "If the focus is kept on the issues, a Democrat will win." Edwards remains neutral on a candidate.

Reportedly, Edwards and Obama were scheduled to meet this past week while Obama visited North Carolina. If this meeting took place, it's being kept on the down low.

Is Edwards seriously considering the VP slot?

Ha ha! Nice (2.00 / 2)

Obama's pretty good at bball reportedly though. So Edwards must be solid.

Edwards is the rare white leaper. (none / 0)

I knew a guy like that in college. A little white guy who could dunk.

But he can't leap into the vice presidency. (1.00 / 1)

Not after Big Bill Richardson's ringing Obama endorsement this A.M.

Not to mention a trial lawyer with limited legislative experience, and a weak foriegn policy background would be the perfect VP for the Repubs to attack.

LOL!! (none / 0)

He does not want to be VP.

Too bad this is about basketball.

No sense of humor.  At least Bob has one.

Hi Tom (1.00 / 1)

Glad to give you an LOL.  We've somewhat missed you over on Daily Kos.  Ah, for the glory days when it was DailyEdwards and your candidate had a shot!  Now he won't lift a finger to help the lone remaining progressive.  Very sad.  And for you of all people, the most earnest and holy Edwards supporter ever to blog anywhere, to bring up the subject of anyone's sense of humor... well let's just say we make each other laugh and leave it at that.

How childish to (none / 0)

insult me in the name of Barack Obama.

I am proud of what I wrote in support of Edwards.  Many people agreed.

And guess what, the last poll before he dropped out, even after losing primaries, Edwards beat Obama 42 to 41%.  Obama lost over and over all year.  In December, he lost 48% to 26%.  he could not win Daily Kos until Edwards quit.

As for progressive, Obama is to the right of Clinton on many domestic issues.  Of course, issues do not matter to hero worshippers, to believers.

Uh, no.

Re: Ha ha! Nice (2.00 / 2)

Thanks.

I think Edwards is pretty good at basketball, it's his favorite sport.

Obama may be good too, but, apparently, not as good as John.

I hear though, that Obama can dance. Obama did say, he'd like to challenge Bill Clinton in a dance contest. (According to Edwards' daughter, Cate, John can NOT dance).

I have to admit, that clip shown last night, that the Leno show put together of the dance contest between Edwards and Obama, is pretty damn funny.

Democrats have more fun!

Re: Ha ha! Nice (2.00 / 1)

No, I think what you mean to say is that all Democrats are weaklings and pansies who don't play "real American" sports, so there's no way these guys could be skilled at basketball. I know is true because Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh tell me so.

He's an athlete (2.00 / 4)

If I remember correctly, Edwards made the Clemson football team his freshman year before transferring, so I believe it.  Apparently Obama doesn't have much of a jumpshot.

Good to see we have finally found a metric through which we can civily discuss the candidates.  :)

Re: John Edwards Kicks Barack Obama's Ass! (w/vide (2.00 / 1)

I'm honestly glad he didn't endorse anyone on Leno, and that's true even if it were Obama.

There's nothing more unsavory than political theatrics on Leno (a la Schwarzenegger announcing his candidacy or Huckabee playing bass).

Don't forget Arsenio and the other musician from Arkansas.

Re: John Edwards Kicks Barack Obama's Ass! (w/vide (none / 0)

Two reasons why that's different.

First, it was the precedent-setter. It was unheard of for a presidential candidate to even go on one of these shows, especially the more youth-oriented "hip" one. Everything else that has come after has been an attempt to recreate that moment. I don't hold the originator to the same standard as I do the imitators.

Second, it's Leno in particular that I can't stand, most especially because he flat-out allowed his show to be Arnold's campaign vehicle. I'd prefer not to keep feeding the beast.

Re: John Edwards Kicks Barack Obama's Ass! (w/vide (none / 0)

I agree with both points.

But in a different world that door (and others e.g. underwear on MTV) could have left closed.  Of course, that's impossible, it turns out most people don't waste their time following political stuff, so you need to reach them where they are.

It's feeling a little Kos in here (2.00 / 2)

I haven't visited in a while - are the ex-Edwards supporters required to wear tracking bracelets or are they free to mix with the general population? ;)

(Hoping no one takes this TOO seriously)

Re: John Edwards Kicks (2.00 / 3)

LOL, I love John. I wavered back and forth between Hillary and Edwards for weeks, and even after I decided on Hillary, I would have been ecstatic with an Edwards nomination. As ugly as the primary season has gotten, I would be perfectly happy if the super delegates stepped in at the convention and said, "Alright Hillary, Barack. You two kids have caused way too much trouble, so we're nominating the grown up."
Even John McCain lusts after teh engels.

Re: John Edwards Kicks (2.00 / 1)

Yes, Edwards basically made that point at the South Carolina debate and was met with a chorus of yawns from the media.

They suddenly found the energy to rightfully praise him only after he made his New Orleans withdrawal speech.

In any other year, I believe Edwards would've been a front-runner. But in a year of two historic "firsts" (first electable female and black candidate), Edwards just got squeezed out and his campaign suffocated from lack of airtime.

I sure hope we haven't seen the last of him, and whomever wins better find a place for him in their administrations, assuming he wants it.

Aren't basketball skills a prerequesite for getting elected to public office in North Carolina?
